FASHION AND TV SERIES: THE NEW FASHION IMPOSED BY ‘BRIDGERTON’

‘Bridgerton’ has reached millions of homes worldwide. What made this Netflix series the star series of the moment? From Meryfor, we tell you all the keys to this new phenomenon that is undoubtedly inspiring current fashion.

One of the influential factors is the incredible wardrobe, designed by Ellen Mirojnik. In period dramas, costumes are everything. Fashion becomes an essential part of the story, reflecting the personality and essence of each character. This is certainly true for Bridgerton, given the majesty of its settings and, above all, its looks.

A total of more than 7,500 costumes were made, perfectly reflecting how young women and ladies of the English aristocracy dressed in the early 1800s. Specifically, the series is set in 1813. "We looked at different silhouettes and shapes with the understanding that it would be an inspiration, not an exact historical recreation," explained the designer.

Do the looks of the protagonist Daphne Bridgerton remind you of anyone?

If your answer is yes, you're right, as Daphne Bridgerton's looks are inspired by Audrey Hepburn's in the 1950s film "War and Peace."

What details make them similar? The hairstyle characterized by the small fringe, tiaras and other accessories with sparkling touches, headpieces and hats, and empire-cut dresses, with a sweet and romantic style cut below the bust.

What elements have most influenced current fashion?

  • The search for period corsets has soared.
  • There has also been a significant increase in interest in dresses with a cut below the bust to achieve a more pronounced décolletage.
  • The search for headpieces with pearls and feathers has also increased.
  • And perhaps long gloves, brooches, or tiaras with updos will also return, to give our looks a sophisticated touch.
The connection with Christian Dior:

The designer, Ellen Mirojnik, when designing the series' costumes, drew inspiration from paintings of the London Regency period, which spanned from 1811 to 1820. During this period, dresses were closely fitted to the torso just below the bust, falling loosely below, clearly as seen in Bridgerton. Have you heard of 'Regencycore' on social media? Magic, fantasy, and special effects. This trend is based on garments worn during the Regency era and is booming.

She also drew inspiration from the 1950s and 60s, which is evident especially in the headpieces, long gloves, etc.

But above all, she was inspired by Dior. "We looked at Dior dresses, from the New Look to today," she confessed.

Indeed, if we look at the new collection that Maria Grazia Chiuri presented for Dior Haute Couture, with medieval influence, for Spring/Summer 2021 at Fashion Week 2021, it's impossible not to be reminded of the costumes from this series. Although the collection is inspired by tarot cards, we can appreciate many very similar details. It immediately brought us to Daphne's looks. Did it happen to you too?

It's clear that if you haven't seen the series yet, Meryfor encourages you to go watch it quickly, because it's having a huge influence on this year's fashion and who knows, maybe on fashion for years to come...

Perhaps soon we will swap the comfy tracksuit total look, long maxi coat and sneakers for grand period dresses and feathered headpieces.
